Pirates Can Be Crowned Diski Champions This Sunday

Orlando Pirates secured an important 2–0 victory over Chippa United at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon, significantly boosting their chances of clinching the DStv Diski Challenge title this season.

The Buccaneers went into the match knowing they were just four points away from securing the Diski Challenge title for the first time since its inception in 2014.

Following the win, Pirates remain top of the standings with 72 points from 29 matches, holding a six-point advantage over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who are also chasing their second title.

Pirates could be crowned champions for the first time in their history on Sunday if Sundowns lose to defending champions Kaizer Chiefs at Dobsonville Stadium. Notably, Chiefs have already beaten Pirates this season, and if they produce a similar performance against Sundowns, they will hand the title to their rivals.

However, if Sundowns overcome Amakhosi, the title race will go down to the final day, when Pirates and Sundowns are set to face each other next weekend at UJ Soweto Stadium. In that scenario, a draw would be enough for Pirates, while Sundowns would need a victory.

Pirates’ goals came from Mpho Padime, who opened the scoring in the first half after being set up by Thuto Sesipi, before Oratile Rantasi doubled the lead in the second half, with Padime again providing the assist.

In other matches played on Saturday, Stellenbosch FC defeated Marumo Gallants 4–0, Durban City lost 3–1 to AmaZulu, Magesi edged Golden Arrows 5–3, and Siwelele secured a 2–1 victory over Sekhukhune United.
