Orlando Pirates climbed to the summit of the Betway Premiership table ahead of Kaizer Chiefs on goal difference after securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite an even first half in Durban, the Buccaneers unlocked Chippa’s defensive setup after the break with three unanswered goals. The result moves Abdelsam Ouaddou’s side to seven points from three matches, edging out Chiefs on goal difference, while AmaZulu drop to third place on the log.
Pirates remained in KwaZulu-Natal following their midweek 1-1 draw against AmaZulu at the same venue on Wednesday. The decision to stay in Durban paid dividends as the Buccaneers extended their dominant record against Chippa United to seven consecutive victories across all competitions.
Chippa United were forced to stage this home fixture in Durban due to maintenance closures at both Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha and Buffalo City Stadium in East London. It marked the Chilli Boys’ second consecutive match away from home following a midweek clash at Dobsonville Stadium.
Pirates threatened early when Oswin Appollis tested Stanley Nwabali with a fierce strike. Deon Hotto also forced the Nigerian international goalkeeper into action with a tipped-over free-kick before the interval.
The breakthrough arrived in the 60th minute when Ghampani Lungu finished decisively following a precise pass from Patrick Maswanganyi. Four minutes later, Lebone Seema doubled the lead, ghosting in unmarked to convert Hotto’s corner past a stranded Nwabali.
Daniel Msendami capped off the victory late on, capitalizing on defensive hesitation from Boy Mohlometsi at the back to strike past Nwabali and seal a commanding three-goal triumph.
