Plumtree’s HT Talk Sparks Sharks’ Stunning Comeback Win Over Ulster

Whatever Hollywoodbets Sharks coach John Plumtree said during halftime clearly ignited his team, as they delivered a powerful second-half performance to defeat Ulster in their Vodacom United Rugby Championship match at Kingspan Stadium on Saturday.

The Sharks completely suffocated Ulster in the second half, scoring two crucial tries to secure a 22-19 victory and a home quarter-final berth in the tournament.

They had been largely ineffective and trailing in the first half, a stark contrast to their transformed performance after the break, reminiscent of their strong showing against Edinburgh the previous weekend.

The Durban-based Sharks played this match without their Springbok lock, Eben Etzebeth, who was ruled out by the team doctor due to illness (flu). Etzebeth had only recently returned from a concussion injury that had sidelined him since December, making his comeback last weekend in the Sharks’ win over Edinburgh, where he was named man of the match.

The home side, Ulster, capitalized on Etzebeth’s absence early on, scoring two tries. The first came in the sixth minute through a well-executed team move finished by Jack Murphy. Three minutes later, a Sharks handling error led to a loose ball. While Siya Kolisi attempted to recover it within his own 22-meter area, Ulster turned it over, allowing Jude Postlethwaite to dive over for their second try.

The Sharks found themselves on the back foot for a significant portion of the first half, losing the initial scrum and being pushed back into their own territory by a vibrant Ulster team playing in front of their home crowd.

The Sharks, who have one of the leakiest defenses in the competition, struggled to contain Ulster as the third try arrived in the 29th minute. Another turnover at the breakdown saw the hosts transition swiftly from defense to attack, with Jacob Stockdale breaking down the right wing before offloading to Nathan Doak for the score.

Finally, the Sharks managed to register their first points of the game in the 33rd minute through a try by Makazole Mapimpi. The winger had an easy run-in after collecting a floated pass from Jaden Hendrikse, which followed a line break in midfield by Jason Jenkins.

During the build-up to the try, Ulster’s Stockdale committed an infringement, resulting in a yellow card and a ten-minute spell in the sin bin.

On the stroke of halftime, Mapimpi thought he had scored the Sharks’ second try, but a review revealed Aphelele Fassi’s pass to the winger was forward, and the try was disallowed. Ulster survived this close call and went into halftime with a 19-5 lead.

However, whatever Plumtree conveyed during the halftime break clearly had a significant impact. The visitors came out with renewed intensity, taking the game to the home side with sustained phases and carries. The Sharks came close to scoring on two occasions, but Ulster’s defense held firm within their 22-meter area.

Despite dominating territory and possession with wave after wave of attack, the Sharks struggled to retain the ball close to Ulster’s try line, with the home side often winning crucial penalties and scrums. It simply wasn’t clicking for the South African side.

Finally, in the 60th minute, the Sharks registered their first try of the second half, with Manu Tshituka diving over to reduce the deficit to 19-12.

The Sharks continued to apply pressure and, in the 70th minute, scored a sensational third try to level the scores. Quick hands through the backline saw Jurenzo Julius sprint over the try line from close range, making the score 19-19.

Ulster, despite their strong start to the first half, seemed to have lost their momentum and failed to add any points in the second half, while the Sharks scored two crucial tries.

With the wind in their sails, the Sharks were awarded a penalty directly in front of the posts with just three minutes remaining. Jordan Hendrikse calmly slotted the kick, giving the Sharks the lead for the first time in the game.

As the clock ticked down, the Sharks managed to retain possession, and once the final siren sounded, they kicked the ball into touch, sparking scenes of excitement among the team, who displayed tremendous courage and character to mount such a comeback. Astonishingly, Ulster failed to score any points in the entire second half.
