Prague Penalty Drama! Czech Republic Ends 20-Year World Cup Wait To Join Bafana

The Czech Republic has officially claimed the final vacancy in Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Group A after a nerve-shredding 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Denmark on Tuesday night.

The playoff final at the Epet ARENA lived up to its billing as a “ding-dong battle,” ending 2-2 after 120 minutes of high-octane football. For the Czechs, the victory ends a 20-year exile from the global showpiece, marking their first qualification since the 2006 tournament in Germany.

A Night of High Drama

The hosts drew first blood in the fourth minute when Pavel Šulc rifled a stunning effort into the top corner from the edge of the box. Denmark responded in the 72nd minute through a towering Joachim Andersen header, forcing the game into extra time.

In the 100th minute, Ladislav Krejčí sent the Prague crowd into a frenzy by restoring the Czech lead via a deflected strike. However, the Danes refused to go quietly; Kasper Høgh connected with an Anders Dreyer corner to level the scores at 2-2 and force the shootout.

The Bafana Bafana Roadmap

With the Czech Republic’s progression, South Africa’s Group A schedule is now set:

  • 11 June: Mexico vs Bafana Bafana (Estadio Azteca, Mexico City)
  • 18 June: Bafana Bafana vs Czech Republic
  • 25 June: Bafana Bafana vs South Korea

This result sets up a clash between two nations ending long droughts; while the Czechs return for the first time since 2006, Bafana Bafana will be making their first appearance since hosting in 2010.

The Czech class of 2026 has finally emulated the legendary era of Petr Čech and Pavel Nedvěd. For Hugo Broos and South Africa, the work begins now to deconstruct a Czech side that has proven its mental fortitude by winning back-to-back penalty shootouts in the space of a week.
