“A Perfect Test”: Why Broos Is Happy with Bafana’s First Home Loss In Five Years
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insists that Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Panama at DHL Stadium was the “perfect test” his side needed ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.
The result marked Broos’s first home defeat since his appointment in May 2021. Despite a stunning equalizer from Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Panama snatched the win through Jiovany Ramos, who capitalised on a late second-half parry from goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner.
Speaking to SABCSport after the final whistle, Broos remained upbeat about the pedagogical value of the loss.
“This was a perfect test for us,” said Broos.
“We know the national football, what is it – football from other continents.
“I’m very happy that we played today [Tuesday] against Panama.
“We saw what we didn’t do on Friday [in Durban] during the game, Panama did it today.”
The focus now shifts to the finalization of Group A. South Africa’s group will be completed on Tuesday, following the high-stakes European playoff between Denmark and Czechia. The winner will join Bafana, South Korea, and co-hosts Mexico.
With the tournament opener at the Estadio Azteca just 72 days away, Broos confirmed that one final warm-up match is non-negotiable.
“There has to be another friendly, that is for sure in June,” confirmed Broos.
“For the moment, we know which team and what country [in the European playoff].
“On the other side, I like to play a match against a European team or maybe an Asian team because we have to play South Korea.
“So, we will see in the next weeks, and I hope that we will soon have an opponent in June.”
The loss in Cape Town may have ended a historic unbeaten run, but for Broos, the data gathered against Panama’s physical, high-tempo style is worth more than a friendly scoreline.
