Richards Bay Reach KZN Premier’s Cup Final After Thrilling Penalty Shootout Win

Richards Bay has progressed to the final of the KZN Premier’s Cup after defeating Midlands Wonderous on penalties at Umhlathuze Stadium on Sunday.
The game went to penalties after finishing 1-1 in regular time, with Richards Bay ultimately winning 4-3. The first half saw no goals, but Richards Bay broke the deadlock in the 71st minute with a goal from Siyabonga Nzama.
However, their lead was short-lived. Midlands Wonderous, who have been promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, equalized in the 79th minute through Smiso Gazu, sending the match to a shootout.
Looking Ahead
Richards Bay, who received a bye into the semifinals, will now face the winner of the other semi-final match between Durban City and AmaZulu, which was also played on Sunday.
Coach’s Remarks
Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel shared his thoughts after the victory:
“It was a good test for us, and a difficult game. Midlands are an up-and-coming team, and they were eager to show what they’re capable of since they had nothing to lose. They showed great energy and were first to everything. But we also showed our determination, and in the end, we won.”
Gabriel added, “It was a beneficial assignment because we plan to use a different squad in the final.”
Conditions and Outlook
Despite the windy conditions and light rain, Richards Bay secured the win and will now have another opportunity to play in the final on Sunday.
