“Richards Bay’s Top 8 Dream Very Much Possible”

Richards Bay co-coach Ronnie Gabriel believes a top-eight finish is “very much possible” following his team’s recent resurgence.

Just a month ago, such a prediction would have seemed improbable, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football results.

Richards Bay, previously mired in the relegation zone, has dramatically improved their form and is now looking upwards.

They secured a commendable 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch in their Betway Premiership match at Danie Craven Stadium on Friday.

Despite taking the lead, they were ultimately held to a draw, leaving them slightly disappointed.

The Natal Rich Boys have climbed to 13th place in the Betway Premiership table with 17 points from 18 matches, seven points behind eighth-placed Stellenbosch.

“We are positive about the team and the way that they play,” said Gabriel.

“I’m sure if you follow our past results in the last four, five games, we have been very good. We have been picking up points at home. At the home we have also been dominating possession, creating a clear cut goal scoring chances. It was a matter of time before we turn it around.”

He added: “Just a few more victories, we can be closer to the top eight come the end of the season.”

When asked by legendary commentator Mark Gleeson if a top-eight finish was achievable, Gabriel was unequivocal. “It is very much possible, very much,” he said.

“The top eight is very possible because if you look at the team from four to 12, they clustered up there. It takes you two wins you are there and there are still 13, 12 league games to go, it is a long way to go.”

Richards Bay’s attacking options will be further strengthened by the return of Yanela Mbuthuma, their top scorer this season, who has completed a three-match suspension.

Mbuthuma is expected to lead the line when the KwaZulu-Natal club hosts Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.
