“Running on Paraffin Fumes”: Dobson Relieved As Lock Crisis Finally Ends

A delighted John Dobson is set to welcome lock Ruben van Heerden back from injury for the DHL Stormers’ United Rugby Championship clash against Connacht.

Van Heerden, who has been sidelined since early February following thumb surgery, returns at a critical time to reinforce a depleted second-row roster.

The Stormers have been hit hard in the lock department, with club captain Salmaan Moerat also sidelined, leaving JD Schickerling and Adre Smith to shoulder the workload.

Dobson suggested that Van Heerden’s return has come at a crucial time.

(His return is) So important. We were running on paraffin fumes. The locks were overplayed,” said a visibly relieved Dobson.

“They were being managed, they were being medically treated, just to stay on the field,” he added.

“We were lucky against Toulon that we could put JD on the bench. Ruben comes back now, and Salmaan will be back in a couple of weeks.”

One of the major strengths of the Stormers at the start of the season – and a huge reason for their long unbeaten run –  was the strength and impact of their bench, an aspect not lost on Dobson.

“Once you can bring JD Schickerling and Adre Smith off the bench, it’s hard for teams to live with that. Or it could be vice versa with that quality of the lock roster. It’s come at just the right time,” explained the director of rugby.

Dobson also confirmed that another key figure in the team’s plans, Seabelo Senatla, is closing in on a return from injury.

As far as injuries are concerned, Dobson believes “we’re heading in the right direction.”

The latest injury update concerns fly-half Jurie Matthee, who sustained an undisclosed injury during training this week.

However, the injury is not believed to be as serious as initially feared.

“They said three weeks at first, but I think it’s a bit better than that.”

“I think there is a chance he could be back for Glasgow. It’s a pity because we wanted him to play this game to get some more minutes.”

The Stormers kick off their match today at 1:45 pm.
