SA Rugby President Backs Bafana Ahead Of World Cup

SA Rugby President Mark Alexander has expressed his full support for Bafana Bafana on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off next month across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

South Africa will open the expanded 48-team tournament against co-hosts Mexico at the historic Estadio Azteca on 11 June.

The blockbuster opener mirrors the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup curtain-raiser between the two nations at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium. Bafana Bafana will then face the Czech Republic on 18 June, before concluding their Group A campaign against South Korea on 25 June.

While South African football chases historical milestones on the global stage, rugby has long enjoyed unparalleled success in the country. The Springboks are four-time world champions, having claimed rugby’s ultimate prize in back-to-back editions.

Their decorated modern legacy also includes a highly publicized, hard-fought series victory over the British & Irish Lions during their tour of South Africa in 2021.

Dear SAFA Leadership, Coach Hugo Broos and team

On behalf of the South African Rugby Union, I extend our warmest wishes to Bafana Bafana as you embark on your FIFA World Cup campaign.

Your dedication, discipline and passion for the game embody the spirit of South African sport and inspire unity across our nation.

We stand proudly alongside you, confident that your journey will showcase resilience, teamwork and excellence on the world stage. May this campaign bring success and strengthen the pride of all South Africans.

With respect and solidarity,

Mark Alexander
President, SA Rugby
