SAFA Technical Committee Meets To Decide Bafana Coach Ahead Of NEC Vote
Sportswire has been informed that the South African Football Association [SAFA] Technical Committee is currently locked in a tense virtual meeting to finalize recommendations for the next Bafana Bafana head coach.
Bafana Bafana are currently without a head coach following Hugo Broos’ departure at the expiration of his contract late last month. Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North Africa, Broos announced his intention to retire from management post-tournament, noting that his career had come full circle 40 years after representing Belgium as a player at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
With Broos stepping aside, SAFA are urgently seeking a successor. According to a copy of the official meeting document obtained by Sportswire—signed by SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao—the technical committee is convening virtually in a hybrid session.
Following their deliberations, the committee will submit its recommendations to the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC), which convenes on Saturday to make the final appointment. SAFA President Danny Jordaan confirmed this process during the press conference announcing Broos’ exit last week.
The NEC remains the highest decision-making body within the association, governing all national team coaching appointments, including Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana.
However, skepticism surrounds the technical committee’s track record, given past administrative conflicts and controversial appointments—such as selecting Molefi Ntseki over superior candidates.
Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt is among those who have openly questioned the committee’s process. Hunt revealed he was interviewed three times in the past for the Bafana Bafana role—including in 2017 when Stuart Baxter was ultimately hired—and argued that SAFA should proactively head-hunt top talent rather than merely sorting through unrequested CVs.
Despite reports, a SAFA source confirmed the association has not formally opened applications for the position, though several resumes have been submitted unsolicited.
Technical Committee Chairperson Jack Maluleka previously disclosed that former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly manager Pitso Mosimane submitted his CV to express interest in returning. Mosimane, who previously managed Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012, remains a frontrunner for the post.
SAFA face strict time constraints ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers kicking off next month. Ranked 54th globally, South Africa have been drawn in Group D alongside Benni McCarthy’s Kenya, Guinea, and Eritrea, and are scheduled to open their campaign at home against Guinea on 23 September.
