Senegal FA Shock Football World By Sacking Cisse

The Senegalese Football Association (SFA) has made a stunning decision to part ways with head coach Aliou Cisse.

The announcement came on Wednesday, with Sports Minister Khady Diene Gaye informing Cisse that his contract would not be renewed on 30 September.

Cisse, 48, was appointed as Senegal’s head coach in March 2015 after serving as the U-23 coach and assistant to a caretaker manager.

He enjoyed remarkable success with the Teranga Lions, leading them to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2019 and securing their first-ever AFCON title in 2022.

Despite their loss in the round of 16 to Ivory Coast in the 2023 AFCON finals, Cisse’s dismissal came as a surprise to many. He also guided Senegal to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022, reaching the knockout stages in Qatar.

The SFA’s decision to sack Cisse comes ahead of their upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi. Reports suggest that the federation is considering appointing another local coach, with Omar Daff, Pape Thiaw, and Habib Beye being potential candidates.

Cisse leaves Senegal with a record of 70 wins, 13 losses, and 24 draws in 99 matches. He faced South Africa’s Bafana Bafana three times, winning two and losing one.
