Shalulile Makes History As Sundowns Edge Stellies

Peter Shalulile has etched his name in the record books as the all-time leading scorer in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after netting his 130th goal in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

Shalulile’s penalty kick on the stroke of halftime proved to be the difference-maker as Sundowns secured all three points to maintain their top spot in the league.

The Brazilians dominated the proceedings from the onset, creating numerous scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but Stellenbosch’s defense held firm.

Arthur Sales came close to breaking the deadlock in the 30th minute with a well-struck shot that was denied by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Five minutes later, Stellenbosch’s defense faltered, and Tashreeq Matthews had a one-on-one opportunity with Stephens, but he failed to capitalize on the chance.

The turning point arrived just before halftime when Shalulile was fouled in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Shalulile coolly slotted the ball past Stephens to give Sundowns the lead.

The milestone goal saw Shalulile surpass Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing record, cementing his status as one of the greatest goal-scorers in PSL history.

In the second half, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso introduced Iqraam Rayners at the start of the half in search of a second goal.

The substitution had an immediate impact, with Sundowns creating several chances, but they failed to convert them into goals.

Cardoso later introduced Jayden Adams in the 65th minute, resting Shalulile and bolstering his midfield.

Adams’ introduction paid off as Kutlwano Lutlhaku came close to doubling Sundowns’ lead with a well-struck shot from outside the box, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Sundowns made further changes in the final 10 minutes, introducing Teboho Mokoena and Devine Lunga, but Stellenbosch held firm to prevent a second goal.

The 1-0 victory sees Sundowns sit atop the league table with 11 points, although Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United, who have 10 points each, could still challenge their position with their matches against Golden Arrows and Durban City, respectively, later in the evening.

Sundowns’ next challenge will be against Magesi at Lucas Moripe Stadium on 14 September, following the FIFA international break.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will focus on the MTN8 Cup final against Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on 13 September.
