Sharks Officially Sign Springbok Winger
The Hollywoodbets Sharks have officially confirmed the signing of Springbok winger Edwill van Der Merwe from the Emirates Lions.
The Lions had previously announced that van Der Merwe would not be renewing his contract at the end of the current season. Sportswire was informed that he was joining the Durban-based side.
Adding to the excitement, the Sharks recently released a social media teaser featuring van Der Merwe scoring a try for the Springboks against Wales in the Qatar Airways Cup at Twickenham last July.
On Monday afternoon, the Sharks solidified the move, welcoming the 28-year-old with the caption, “Welcome to the Sharks family, Edwill van der Merwe.”
Reports indicate that the Sharks successfully fought off significant overseas competition to secure van Der Merwe’s services from next season. He was reportedly a target for English Premiership club Sale Sharks, but ultimately committed to a deal at Kings Park.
Van Der Merwe’s arrival will strengthen an already impressive Springbok-laden backline, which includes Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Andre Esterhuizen, Grant Williams, and Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse.
In related news, the Sharks will lose prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, who is set to join the Stormers at the end of the season.
