Sharks Star Prop Ox Extends Contract

Durban-based side Sharks confirm star prop Ox Nche has extended his contract until 2028.

The 29-year-old loosehead prop is in his second stint with the Sharks, having initially joined in 2019 from the Free State Cheetahs. He rejoined the franchise in 2020 and has since featured in 131 matches.

Nche played a crucial role in the Sharks becoming the first South African side to win the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) Challenge Cup last season, defeating Gloucester in the final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He scored five tries across all competitions last season.

He was also a member of the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup-winning squad in 2023, although he only started one match against Romania. Nche played a key role in the Springboks’ Rugby Championship victory earlier this year and was named in the World Rugby Team of the Year.

By extending his contract with the Sharks, Nche joins Siya Masuku, who recently signed a new deal with the Durban-based side.

Nche, along with many Springboks stars, was rested for Saturday’s loss to Handre Pollard’s Leicester Tigers in the Investec Champions Cup. They are expected to return to the starting lineup, alongside Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth, when the Sharks host the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday.
