Stellenbosch Extend Veteran’s Contract, Future Backroom Role Planned

Stellenbosch has confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt will remain with the club for the upcoming season after signing a new contract.

This new deal might be Langeveldt’s last as a player, as the club has indicated their intention to transition him into a backroom role in the future, similar to how they’ve integrated Angelo Kerspuy, now the club’s senior team manager.

Langeveldt, formerly of Golden Arrows, is the sole remaining player from the Stellies squad that achieved promotion to the Betway Premiership in the 2018/19 season. The 38-year-old, who joined Stellenbosch in October 2017, has made 48 appearances across all competitions, keeping 20 clean sheets.

Notably, he did not feature in a single match last term, with coach Steve Barker preferring Sage Stephens and Oscarine Masuluke.

Club Statement

Stellenbosch FC officially announced the contract extension, stating: “Stellenbosch FC is proud to announce that veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt has signed a contract extension that will see him enter his 21st season as a professional.”

The statement continued: “Langeveldt, who hails from Stellenbosch, will remain part of the first-team squad for the 2025/26 season before being provided the opportunity to transition into a backroom role, where he will serve as a goalkeeper coach for the club’s Reserve, Youth, and Ladies teams.”

This agreement, the club highlighted, “forms part of the club’s broader commitment to creating structured post-playing pathways for players who have served with distinction, as already reflected in the presence of former midfielder Angelo Kerspuy in the club’s Team Manager role.”

The club also emphasized Langeveldt’s enduring legacy: “Langeveldt is the last remaining member of the playing squad that won the 2018/19 National First Division title and earned promotion to the top-flight, and played a key role in establishing Stellies’ status as a Premiership side during the club’s early seasons in the competition.” They concluded by stating, “His experience and leadership, combined with a deep-rooted connection to both the club and the wider community, uniquely position him to make a lasting impact both on and off the pitch for Stellenbosch FC.”

Last season, Stellies reached the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals in their debut entry and won the Carling Knockout trophy in the 2023/24 season, defeating TS Galaxy in a penalty shootout at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
