Stormers Midfield Star Set To Leave Cape Town For European Giants

The Stormers are set to lose a key figure in their backline, with one of their most experienced midfielders heading overseas for a new challenge.

According to Neil Fissler of RugbyPass, inside centre Dan du Plessis is leaving Cape Town to join French Top 14 side Bordeaux-Bègles, the reigning back-to-back Investec Champions Cup winners.

The 31-year-old, who is equally comfortable at outside centre, has made 87 appearances for the Stormers and hails from one of South Africa’s most celebrated rugby families. He is the son of former Springbok centre Michael du Plessis and the nephew of Springbok greats Carel du Plessis, famously known as the “Prince of Wings”, and Willie du Plessis.

Du Plessis and long-time midfield partner Ruhan Nel wrote their names into the Stormers’ record books this season when they surpassed the long-standing mark held by De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert for the most appearances as a centre pairing.

The milestone was achieved during the United Rugby Championship semi-final against Leinster, with Du Plessis and Nel featuring together in midfield for the 31st time.

His departure will leave a significant void in the Stormers’ midfield, although Damian Willemse appears the most likely candidate to fill the role.

The move could also open the door for Wandisile Simelane to establish himself as a regular starter at centre, while Jonathan Roche and highly rated teenage prospect Markus Muller will be eager to strengthen their claims for increased game time in the seasons ahead.
