Mosimane Re-Unites With Former Sundowns Ally To Complete Bafana Backroom
Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed Marcus Mashilo as his new goalkeeper coach, completing his technical team ahead of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Mosimane has brought Mashilo into his technical team following the departure of Grant Johnson, who served as goalkeeper coach under former Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.
Mashilo is currently the goalkeeper coach at Marumo Gallants and previously worked with Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns, where the two were together from 2013 until Mosimane left the club in September 2020. Mashilo remained at Sundowns until July 2024.
The new Bafana coach explained that Mashilo’s experience made him the right addition to his technical team, despite not being one of the biggest names in South African football.
“Yeah, the technical team is complete now,” Mosimane said.
“We’ve got Marcus Mashilo to help us as a goalkeeper coach. Marcus has experience. Marcus worked with me at Sundowns.
“Marcus worked with Coach Manqoba Mngqithi at Sundowns. He worked with Coach Rulani Mokwena. He even went to work with Coach Manqoba at Golden Arrows, and now he is at Marumo Gallants.
“Yeah, he has learned a lot. He was an assistant to Wendell, and he also learned during the time of Ibarola. So, Marcus has been around.
“Maybe he doesn’t have that big, big name, but Marcus has been around. Yeah, good. He has trained Kennedy Mweene, he has trained Dennis Onyango, he’s trained all these big players at Sundowns, and he has achieved a lot at Sundowns and contributed to a lot of trophies that have been won.”
Mashilo’s appointment means Mosimane has now completed the main technical structure of his Bafana Bafana setup. Morena Ramoreboli has been appointed as assistant coach, while Musi Matlaba will work as the performance analyst.
Kabelo Rangoaga has also joined the technical team as the fitness and conditioning coach, with Mashilo taking responsibility for the goalkeepers.
Mosimane and his technical team now face the task of preparing Bafana for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with South Africa set to face Guinea and Eritrea before the end of September.
