Sundowns Await Club World Cup Draw On Thursday
South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns will learn their opponents in the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday in Miami after all teams confirmed their qualification.
Brazilian side Botafogo was the latest to join the 32-team tournament, having won the Copa Libertadores in South America.
Botafogo, who defeated fellow Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro, are the fourth Brazilian team to qualify for the expanded competition.
The inaugural edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will take place in the United States from 15 June to 13 July 2025. This global event will bring together the most successful club sides from six international confederations: AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC, and UEFA.
From an African perspective, Sundowns will be joined by Al Ahly, Esperance, and Wydad Casablanca in the tournament, due to CAF’s ranking pathway.

Tournament Format:
- Group Stage: Eight groups of four teams each, playing a single-round robin format.
- Knockout Stage: The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16.
- Single-Match Elimination: From the round of 16 to the final.
- No Third-Place Playoff.
The tournament will be held across 12 venues in the United States, with the final taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and the opening match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
