Sundowns Extend Premiership Lead With Victory Over Bay

Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
Arthur Sales opened the scoring for Sundowns in the first half, while Lucas Ribeiro Costa added the second with a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the second half.
Iqraam Rayners had an opportunity to extend the lead when he rounded Salim Magoola, but his angle was narrow, and the danger was averted. Rayners attempted to recycle the ball, setting up Peter Shalulile, but Shalulile’s attempted flying kick went wide.
Despite this missed opportunity, Sundowns secured the victory, extending their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership to 30 points after 11 matches.
Sundowns have played two games more than second-placed Orlando Pirates, who are set to face Magesi at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. A win for Pirates would see them move to 27 points with a game in hand, three points behind Sundowns.
The victory for Sundowns came on a dry pitch in Durban. However, this did not hinder their dominance. Sales capitalized on a pass from Costa, chipping the ball over Magoola in the 19th minute.
While Sundowns enjoyed a comfortable first half, they continued to press forward in the second. Aubrey Modiba set up Costa, who curled a beautiful shot past Magoola to score the second goal.
This victory marks Sundowns’ fourth consecutive win under new coach Miguel Cardoso, during which they have scored five goals in four matches across all competitions. Notably, Sundowns have yet to concede a goal under Cardoso’s guidance.
