Sundowns Release Maema After Four Years At Club

Mamelodi Sundowns have released another player, Neo Maema, after four years with the club.

The 30-year-old, who joined Sundowns before the 2020/21 season from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, is no longer part of the team’s plans.

He was sent to join the Bafana Bafana CHAN team, where he serves as the captain. He scored as the makeshift Bafana Bafana side defeated Guinea, and they will face Niger on Friday.

In a statement, Sundowns said, “After four incredible years, four league titles, one Nedbank Cup, one MTN8, one African Football League title, 120 appearances, 13 goals and 14 assists, the Yellow Nation bids farewell to Neo Maema. We wish you success in the next step of your career.”

Maema joins Thembinkosi Lorch, whose departure Sundowns also announced on Thursday night. The former PSL Footballer of the Season is being linked with a move to the Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, where he was on loan during the second half of last season.

Maema will not be short of options either, as Kaizer Chiefs were previously linked to him. Other clubs interested in his services are Simba SC in Tanzania and Siwelele FC in Bloemfontein, his home province.
