SuperSport Retains Hunt As Head Coach
SuperSport United has announced a two-year contract extension for head coach Gavin Hunt. Hunt’s previous contract expired at the end of June 2024.
This marks Hunt’s second stint at the helm of Matsatsantsa. During his first spell from 2007 to 2013, he achieved remarkable success, leading the team to three consecutive league titles (2008-2010) and an Nedbank Cup triumph in the 2011/12 season, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
Following his departure from SuperSport in 2013, Hunt joined Bidvest Wits, where he further bolstered his trophy cabinet with a league title, MTN8, and Carling Black Label Cup.
After Bidvest Wits’ ownership changed, Hunt moved on to Kaizer Chiefs in September 2020. However, his tenure was short-lived, with the team failing to reach the top eight in the league, despite reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
Following his dismissal from Chiefs, Hunt had a brief and unsuccessful stint at Chippa United in 2021, winning just one out of ten matches before being sacked.
He returned to SuperSport at the beginning of the 2022/23 season, guiding the Tshwane giants to a third-place finish and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
The past season proved more challenging for SuperSport, with a young squad leading to a seventh-place finish. They are currently set to face Orlando Pirates in the upcoming MTN8 quarterfinals.
If Hunt remains at SuperSport until the end of the upcoming season, he is on track to become the first coach in South Africa’s top-flight league to reach the milestone of 1,000 matches managed.
