The Prague Decider: Tactical Preview Of Denmark vs Czechia And The Implications For Bafana

Bafana Bafana’s full 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A lineup will be finalized on Tuesday night as Denmark faces Czechia in Prague.

The winner joins South Africa, South Korea, and co-hosts Mexico for the tournament’s opening phase this June.

When the World Cup draw took place in Washington in December last year, South Africa were grouped with co-hosts Mexico and South Korea.

However, one European spot remained undecided, as it depended on the outcome of the European playoffs held in March.

Bafana were awaiting the winner between Denmark or North Macedonia, and Czechia or Ireland.

In one of the playoff matches, Czechia emerged victorious, beating Ireland 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Prague.

In the other clash, Denmark hammered North Macedonia 4-0 at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, with goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, a brace by Gustav Isaksen, and a late strike from Christian Norgaard to complete the rout.

Denmark and Czechia will now face off at the 18,349-seater Epet ARENA in Prague on Tuesday night.

Experienced Italian referee Maurizio Mariani has been appointed to officiate the match.

The winner will face Bafana Bafana in their second Group A fixture on 18 June.

The last time these two European nations met was at the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, where Denmark defeated Czechia to book their place in the semi-finals.

South Africa will open the global showpiece against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June.

The match will be a repeat of the opening fixture of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which ended in a 1–1 draw at FNB Stadium.

Adding another layer of history, Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre returns to the World Cup, having also led El Tri in that 2010 tournament opener against Bafana Bafana.

Bafana Bafana, appearing at their first World Cup since 2002, will then face either Denmark or Czechia on 18 June before concluding their group-stage campaign against South Korea on 25 June.

With the expanded format increasing the knockout stage to 32 teams, securing a positive result in their final group match could prove crucial to South Africa’s hopes of making history.
