“They Know What They Did” – Phili’s Father Slams AmaZulu, Reveals European Ambitions

Patrick Phili, the father of Stellenbosch standout Langelihle Phili, has issued a scathing assessment of AmaZulu, insisting his son will never return to the Durban-based club.

Despite Langelihle’s sterling season in the Western Cape, his camp is now focused exclusively on a move to Europe.

Patrick confirmed that Phili will not entertain any advances from Usuthu, regardless of their efforts. “They know what they did,” a stern Patrick told Sportswire.

“I told them why I took my son away. They need to accept that. Phili won’t ever come back to play for AmaZulu—they should just forget it.”

The Rise of “Major” at Stellenbosch

The 21-year-old attacker, affectionately known as “Major,” has enjoyed a meteoric rise since joining the Stellenbosch academy from AmaZulu at the start of the 2023/24 season.

After leading the Stellies reserves to a historic quadruple—including the DStv Diski Challenge and the Premier League Next Generation Cup—Stellenbosch handed Phili a professional contract in September 2024.

Phili made an immediate impact on the senior stage, scoring on his full debut during a 5-0 thrashing of Nsingizini Hotspurs in the CAF Confederation Cup last season.

His fine form has continued into the current 2025/26 campaign, where he has netted eight goals and provided one assist in 30 appearances across all competitions.

European Ambitions and the Glenwood Connection

A product of Durban’s Glenwood High School—the same institution that produced Springbok stars Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse—Phili’s success has sparked significant external interest.

While AmaZulu previously held an academy partnership with the school, that relationship has since ended, and Patrick is adamant that his son’s future lies far beyond KZN.

“He is at Stellenbosch, and the next step is to go further,” Patrick added.

“There is interest, but I don’t want to speak too much. Football matters move very quickly. We plan for him to go abroad after Stellenbosch. Last year alone, he went on three different trials.”

Sportswire understands that Phili’s current contract with the Maroons runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, placing Stellenbosch in a strong position should a European suitor come knocking in the next transfer window.
