‘They Play Mental Games’: MLS-Based Star Reveals What To Expect Against World Cup Hosts Mexico

Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has warned South Africa to prepare for intense mental games and passionate crowds when they battle co-hosts Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match in Mexico City on 11 June.

The 22-year-old Philadelphia Union defender credits his Major League Soccer experience with providing vital insights into North American football ahead of the Group A campaign.

South Africa will face Mexico in their opening fixture before taking on Czechia and South Korea in their remaining group matches.

Makhanya is not the only Bafana Bafana player currently based in North America, with fellow youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi having joined MLS side Chicago Fire earlier this year.

As Bafana continued preparations for the global showpiece, Makhanya admitted that playing in the MLS and competing against Mexican teams in CONCACAF competitions exposed him to the intensity and mentality of football in the region.

“Well, playing in the MLS has also allowed me to compete against teams from Mexico in the CONCACAF,” said Makhanya.

“So, I would say there are a lot of things to expect from the fans and the opponents. They fight for everything. They are not really the most physical, but they compete for even the smallest things, and they keep fighting until the final whistle.

“They will also try to play mental games and say certain things to get into your head. If we all stay focused and mentally locked in throughout the whole game, we should be fine. This team has all the talent and qualities to go out there and compete.”

The Stellenbosch Academy graduate further explained that the atmosphere in Mexico will be another major challenge for Bafana Bafana, especially with the passionate support expected from the home crowd during the tournament.

“I mean, judging by everything that’s happening right now, the whole country is excited. They have been preparing everything to welcome the teams that are going to participate in the World Cup,” he added.

“And as I said, the atmosphere in the stadiums and the Mexican fans are really passionate, just as passionate as the players.

“They are going to go crazy supporting their team throughout the whole game. So, if we just stay focused, as I said, we should be fine.”

The uncapped starlet still chases his senior international debut, eyeing his first Bafana Bafana cap in Friday’s send-off friendly against Nicaragua at Orlando Amstel Arena.
