“We Suffered, Then Reacted” – Ben Youssef Breaks Down Chiefs’ Tactical Comeback
Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has reinforced the club’s commitment to a disciplined, “game-by-game” philosophy following their 3-1 comeback victory over Orbit College on Monday.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys’ latest triumph saw them climb into the top three of the Betway Premiership standings, with 39 points from 21 matches this season.
The result also marked their third consecutive victory, signalling a strong recovery after a disappointing run of three straight defeats.
Despite their rise up the table, Ben Youssef remained grounded when discussing the team’s ambitions, making it clear that the focus is on steady progress rather than placing additional pressure on a squad that includes many young players.
“I think from the beginning of the season we said we are taking it game by game,” he told SuperSport TV after the match.
“We don’t want to put too much pressure on them, especially as we have a lot of young players. We knew we had to support and protect them. I think the target remains the same; we are approaching it one game at a time.
“Now that this game is finished, we will start preparing for the next one. The most important thing is our team and our performances, and we will determine where we finish.”
Reflecting on the match, the Tunisian mentor admitted his side struggled in the first half before producing a much-improved display after the break to secure the comeback victory.
“I’m happy with the result, but it was a difficult game; we suffered a lot in the first half,” he added.
“I think in the second half we reacted well because we started to play our football, and in the final third we showed more fight. I’m very happy with the second half — the first half was not good, but the second half was much better.
“It shows a strong mindset to come back from 1-0 down and win 3-1. We created a lot of chances in the second half, but now we have to focus on the next game. Congratulations to the team and the fans — I’m very pleased with the players’ performance.”
Following this important win, Chiefs will return to action on Sunday when they face TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium, as they aim to maintain their momentum and continue their push towards their season target.
