Why Amakhosi Chose Sasol League Over Buying Top-Flight Status

Kaizer Chiefs’ sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, has explained why they decided to start their women’s football team in the second division rather than purchasing a top-flight status.

Chiefs officially unveiled their women’s side on Tuesday, confirming that the team will compete in the Sasol Women’s League and will be coached by Unathi Mabena.

Motaung Jr said the decision to start in the second division was deliberate, with the aim of building the team organically and gaining valuable experience.

“It was deliberate,” said Motaung Jr.

“Because the women’s game has its unique challenges, and the Sasol League is no exception. We want to grow and learn in that space, and I think the time with Home Sweepers last year was very important for us.

“That’s the step we chose to take, and we are very privileged to have someone like Joseph Mkhonza and the setup he had in KwaThema. It was a great learning curve for us. In the Sasol League, you learn very quickly, and that is part of the reason we want to take our time.”

Brima Logistics has come on board as the official partner of Kaizer Chiefs Ladies after approaching the club.

The team will be based in Johannesburg and led by Mabena, who will be assisted by Justice Khunou. Both bring valuable experience and a strong understanding of the local football landscape.

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies will play their home matches at the Kaizer Chiefs Village and KwaThema Stadium in Springs.
