Willemse’s 50th Cap Defined The New Springbok Tactical Era

The Springboks’ ability to adapt under pressure, coupled with the squad’s ever-growing depth, proved decisive in their commanding victory over England at Ellis Park, according to Damian Willemse, who celebrated his 50th Test cap alongside fellow milestone man Cheslin Kolbe.

Willemse was outstanding at fullback as South Africa overcame a determined England outfit, defusing the visitors’ aerial threat while providing composure and attacking spark from the back in a convincing opening Test victory.

Reflecting on the performance, the 28-year-old praised the team’s resilience after England responded to the Springboks’ blistering start.

“Of course I am very happy. It’s a great team win for us in the first Test of the year,” Willemse said.

“We got off to a good start in the first 10 to 15 minutes, but we knew England were going to punch back because they’re a great side.”

Although South Africa went into the halftime break with plenty to improve on, Willemse revealed the Springboks made important tactical adjustments to counter England’s kicking game.

“The things we prepped for, we didn’t get quite right, so we tried to make different plans at half-time. We knew they would come with their kicking game and the great players they have.”

He credited assistant coaches Mzwandile “Stokke” Stick and Felix Jones for preparing the back three to deal with England’s aerial assault.

“We’ve been working on that, and credit must go to the coaching staff, especially coach Stokke and Felix, for preparing us in those areas.

“I think the guys around me – Kurt-Lee, Cheslin and myself – did a good job in handling their kicking game,” Willemse said.

The occasion was made even more memorable as both Willemse and Kolbe reached the milestone of 50 Test appearances for the Springboks.

Willemse paid tribute to his long-time teammate, describing the winger as both an exceptional player and person.

“It is a special occasion for both of us. He is a top man and a top rugby player.”

The fullback also reflected on the people who have shaped his career, thanking the Springbok coaching staff, past and present, including former assistant coach Jacques Nienaber, as well as his family for their unwavering support.

“Coach Jacques is not here, but he picked me and helped me develop my skill set to reach this milestone,” said a humble Willemse.

“I am just grateful to the coaching staff, the players and my family. Lots of sacrifices were made on their side.”

Having featured across the backline throughout his international career, Willemse looks increasingly at home in the No. 15 jersey, where he has become a key figure in South Africa’s attacking framework.

He believes playing alongside talented teammates makes his job considerably easier.

“When you play with a guy like Manie on the inside, Damian in the centre, and Jesse, who is a threat as well, it makes your job easier,” he said.

“The forwards set a great platform for us to launch off, and I got my opportunities and used them.”

Willemse explained that his primary focus was to make good decisions and ensure the forwards received quality ball to attack with.

“My role on Saturday was to be decisive and to give the forwards good-quality ball going forward,” he said.

He also praised the pack for responding after an inconsistent line-out display in the opening half.

“It all started up front. We lost some line-outs, which we spoke about at half-time, but they turned it around with quick solutions and by executing our plans.”

With the England Test now behind them, Willemse said attention would quickly turn to next week’s clash against Scotland, although there would first be time to celebrate Kolbe’s milestone.

“Scotland is a great side. We’ll get together and start analysing them and putting plans in place in preparation for them,” he said.

“We’ll celebrate the likes of Cheslin, who will be presented with something special before we turn our attention to Scotland.”
