World Cup Star Mbokazi Set To Team Up With Legendary Striker At Chicago Fire

Bafana Bafana standout defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is set to share a locker room with legendary striker Robert Lewandowski when he returns to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire in the coming weeks.

The Fire pulled off a massive transfer coup by signing Lewandowski following his departure from Barcelona at the end of last season. During his final campaign in Spain, the iconic forward helped the Catalan giants secure back-to-back La Liga titles. The 37-year-old originally joined Barcelona in 2022 from Bayern Munich, where he famously won eight Bundesliga titles, matching the two league crowns he previously claimed under Jürgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Lewandowski’s career statistics are staggering. The former FIFA World Player of the Year netted 120 goals in 193 appearances for Barcelona, which followed a legendary stint at Bayern Munich where he scored 344 goals in 375 matches. During his early breakthrough years at Dortmund, he found the back of the net 103 times in 187 games.

Now entering the twilight of an illustrious career, the Polish icon moves to the United States to wind down his playing days alongside Mbokazi.

However, this high-profile partnership could be short-lived. Mbokazi’s stellar performances during South Africa’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign—where Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stages for the first time—have caught the attention of several global suitors.

While South Africa’s fairytale run on North American soil ended on Sunday following a narrow Round of 32 defeat to co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles, Mbokazi’s individual stock has skyrocketed.

In contrast to Mbokazi’s World Cup exploits, Lewandowski’s Poland failed to qualify for the global showpiece. Nonetheless, the veteran forward remains one of the greatest goalscorers in football history, holding Poland’s all-time record with 89 goals in 167 international caps.
