Is The League Title Race Over? Cardoso Replies
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Cardoso has warned the club fans not to celebrate, saying it is still early to say the league has been won.
This was after the Brazilians beat Durban-based side AmaZulu 2-0 in the Betway Premiership match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Brazilians increased the lead at the summit with 58 points after 22 matches, 18 points over the second-placed Orlando Pirates.
On the other hand, the Buccaneers played to a disappointing 0-0 draw against Stellenbosch on Tuesday, despite Steve Barker’s side playing the entire second half with a man down.
While the Buccaneers are lurking behind and picking up scraps at the moment, they still have four games in hand. If Pirates can win all their games in hand, they will be six points behind the Brazilian.
“I have a big respect for myself and football, this championship will be tough because no one will give up,” the Portuguese tactician said.
“From the advantage we have, I think we need to keep it as much as we can to be strong as possible. We need to prepare ourselves very well, and any team can take points from any team in this Championship.
“We must give respect to the game itself and give our best, so a lot to go and let’s focus on the next match.”
Sundowns and Pirates will lock horns at FNB Stadium this Sunday. The last time these two sides faced each other, the Brazilians hammered Pirates 4-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this year. If Pirates can win on Sunday, their hopes of winning the league might come back.
