South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed for a second term as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during the election on Wednesday.
Motsepe, who was first elected unopposed in March 2021, has overseen significant financial reforms within CAF.
His leadership has garnered support from numerous member associations across the continent, leading them to encourage his re-election.
“Thanks to all the vice presidents,” said Motsepe in his acceptance speech.
“When we had a meeting on Monday, some of the staff, some of the EXCO members, and some of the member associations said, ‘President, please don’t call us at two o’clock in the morning if there is something you are worried about.’
“I promised them that ‘I think I will call you at two o’clock in the afternoon.’ So, thank you so much because this is about Africa, this is about the people of this continent, and it has been a huge privilege for me to get exposed to each and every one of you, because you represent the very best of the continent and the very best of the world.
“Thank you once more.”
The electoral congress was also attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, where FIFA Council members from Africa were also to be elected for another four years.
South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan was also in attendance to represent South Africa and to show support for Motsepe on his significant election day.
