Williams: We Cried A Lot

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams feels like they’ve disappointed a lot of people by failing to secure the CAF Champions League title.

On this day, on Sunday last weekend, Sundowns had a chance to become the first South African team to win the Champions League for the second time, but they were stunned by Egyptian side Pyramids.

This has led to the Yellow Nation filled with sadness and disappointment as they had so many expectations that they would bring back the second star to Chloorkop.

The Bafana Bafana captain has expressed how much they’ve sacrificed for this title and knows the significance of it to the club and the fans, hence he feels like they’ve disappointed a lot of people.

“We’ve fought, we’ve sacrificed, we’ve cried and we’ve bled for the Champions League,” said Williams.

“We know how important it is to the club, to the players, the fans, and it feels like we’ve let so many people down because everyone’s expectations were so high for us to lift it this year.

“So you just have to keep going, believing, have faith in the club, the technical team and the players, that is just how life is, you know. God loves us all, and when it’s your time to do it and to win it, others will get the chance, and at this moment, we need to clap hands and appreciate the work that Pyramids has done as well.”

With the FIFA Club World Cup a week away, Williams has urged Sundowns fans not to give up on them, emphasizing that they are needed more than ever.

The Brazilians will leave for the United States on 7 June, on Sunday, to participate in this tournament for the second time, making them the first team from South Africa to do so.

“I want to take this opportunity and thank Amasandawana for being with us throughout the season, for beating those drums, for filling up the stadiums, the love, the messages that we receive on social media, the interactions we have outside of the soccer field, filling up Or Tambo as well,” said Williams.

“It just shows how you guys support us through thick and thin, and we appreciate that as a club. We’re thankful to you guys, don’t give up on us, we need you now more than ever. Let’s stick together, let this defeat even bring us closer, and we’ll rise again, the sky is always the limit.”
