Hunt: If I Talk About SuperSport, I’ll Have To Leave The Country

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt has sensationally claimed that if he were to reveal the full story of his recent departure from SuperSport United, he would “have to skip the country because it will be an explosion.”
Hunt further teased that a future tell-all book would “be the best-selling book in the country.”
Hunt’s second spell at SuperSport ended abruptly in March when he was dismissed amidst the club’s struggle to avoid relegation.
Following his departure, Andre Arendse was appointed caretaker coach, successfully guiding the team to safety with a crucial draw against Golden Arrows in the final match of the season.
However, SuperSport has since ceased to exist, having been sold to Calvyn Le’John, son of Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, and rebranded as Siwelele Football Club.
Hunt expressed immense personal struggle during his tumultuous final months at SuperSport, empathizing with the players who also endured the uncertainty.
“There is so much I can say,” Hunt replied to Sportswire.
“I always say let’s leave dogs lie sometimes. Sometimes you burn bridges in football, and there is so much I can say, and they could say so much about me as well.”
He continued, “In football or in life, there are three sides. Lots went down there, and you see what is happening now. You can imagine what I was going through, clubs getting sold, players out of contract, blah, blah, blah. You can imagine what went down there. Trying to motivate or get a team together. But I think the less said the better. It will come out in my book one day; it would be bestselling book. I will have to leave the country.”
Known as a “cup king” domestically during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure, Hunt elevated SuperSport United’s success even further in his initial spell, securing three consecutive league titles between 2008 and 2010. He added the Nedbank Cup in the 2011/12 season, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
His departure from SuperSport came after they lost the same competition to Kaizer Chiefs in Durban the following season, prompting his move to Bidvest Wits.
At Wits, Hunt continued his winning ways, securing the league title, the MTN8, and the Carling Knockout. However, mirroring SuperSport’s fate, Wits was also sold at the end of the 2019/20 season.
After brief stints with Chiefs, which he still describes as a painful dismissal due to needing more time, and Chippa United, Hunt returned to SuperSport at the start of the 2022/23 season.
Reflecting on the period since his March dismissal, Hunt candidly stated, “The break killed me,” acknowledging that the past three to four months have been the most challenging in his three-decade-long coaching career.
