Mabasa Sets Sights On Becoming All-Time Leading Goal Scorer For Pirates

Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa has revealed his ambitious goal for the upcoming season, aiming to become the Buccaneers’ all-time leading goal scorer.

With 46 goals in 132 games since joining the club in 2019, Mabasa currently trails the record-holder, Benedict Vilakazi, who has 58 goals in all competitions.

Mabasa needs just 13 goals to surpass Vilakazi’s record, which includes 44 league goals, seven CAF competition goals, three Nedbank Cup goals, one Telkom Knockout goal, and three MTN8 Cup goals.

Speaking on Newzroom Afrika, Mabasa expressed his determination to achieve this feat, saying,

“Yes, definitely. I’m that person who has set himself a goal for the club. My goal is to be the all-time top goal scorer for the club, and I think I can do that with the first few games this coming season.”

With the support of his teammates and the belief they have in him, Mabasa is confident he can break Vilakazi’s record while helping the club win trophies.

“Hopefully, I can achieve that. And the support that I have from my teammates and how everyone shows the belief in me, I think that is something I will definitely achieve to also help the club win trophies,” he added.

Mabasa’s goal-scoring prowess is evident from his previous performances, including scoring 19 goals in all competitions in the 2023/24 season, where he also won the top goal scorer award in the league with 16 goals.

As the Buccaneers prepare to kick-start their season against Polokwane City in the MTN8 Cup quarterfinal at Orlando Stadium next Saturday, Mabasa will be looking to increase his tally and make significant progress towards his goal.

“I think that’s the most important thing for me, and we hope we can take this club to the second star and win league titles and also domestic trophies,” Mabasa concluded, highlighting the team’s aspirations for the season.
