South Africa Win Namibia T20I Tri-Series Final, Defeating Zimbabwe
The Proteas produced a commanding all-round performance to beat Zimbabwe by 48 runs and lift the T20I Tri-Series trophy in Windhoek on Sunday.
Batting first after winning the toss, South Africa posted an imposing 205/5 from their 20 overs before bowling Zimbabwe out for 157 in 18 overs to complete a clean sweep over the Chevrons in the tournament.
With leading run-scorer Lhuan-dre Pretorius ruled out with a groin injury, the Proteas needed others to step up, and Jordan Hermann answered the call emphatically.
Hermann smashed his maiden T20I half-century from just 24 balls and finished with an impressive 53 off 29 deliveries, including eight fours and a six. He shared an 84-run opening partnership with Connor Esterhuizen, who contributed a brisk 32 off 23 balls.
The Proteas maintained their momentum despite losing both openers, with Dewald Brevis adding 32 off 23 balls and Rubin Hermann striking 27 off 16 as South Africa accelerated towards the 200-run mark.
The final overs provided the finishing touch as South Africa reached 205/5, leaving Zimbabwe with a daunting required run rate from the outset.
Zimbabwe’s chase quickly unravelled.
They slumped to 24/4 as the Proteas’ bowling attack applied relentless pressure, with captain Bjorn Fortuin leading from the front. The spinner claimed 3/24 from his four overs, while Duan Jansen chipped in with 3/38.
Zimbabwe were eventually reduced to 81/8 before Brad Evans and Kundai Matigimu produced a spirited ninth-wicket partnership worth 52 runs.
Evans battled superbly for his unbeaten 56 off 31 balls, but the required rate had already become insurmountable. Matigimu’s dismissal for 19 off 11 balls ended Zimbabwe’s resistance, with the Chevrons bowled out for 157 in the 18th over.
Hermann was named Player of the Match, while Brevis was rewarded for his outstanding tournament by being named Player of the Series.
The triumph represents an impressive turnaround for a young and experimental Proteas side that began the tournament with a defeat against hosts Namibia.
South Africa responded by beating Zimbabwe twice in the competition before edging Namibia by 11 runs in their final round-robin match to secure their place in the decider.
They then produced arguably their most complete performance of the tournament when it mattered most, with contributions throughout the batting order followed by disciplined and incisive bowling.
The victory also gives captain Fortuin and the Proteas valuable momentum ahead of their upcoming engagements, while providing further exposure to several players pushing for greater international opportunities.
South Africa finished the tournament as deserved champions – and did so in emphatic fashion.
