Wallabies Hand Springboks Crushing Defeat In Rugby Championship Opener

In a stunning upset, the Springboks were outplayed in every aspect of the second half, losing 38-22 to Australia in the opening match of the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The defending champions failed to score a single point after the break, as the Wallabies secured their first win on South African soil in 17 years. It was the first win for the Wallabies also at Ellis Park Stadium in 62 years.

The two teams will face off again next weekend in Cape Town, but the Boks will have to regroup after a performance that saw them completely overwhelmed.

First-Half Dominance

The Springboks started strong, with Kurt-lee Arendse scoring an unmarked try in the second minute. The Boks continued to apply pressure, with André Esterhuizen adding a second try in the 12th minute and Siya Kolisi, playing at number 8 for the first time, scoring a third just six minutes later. This put the world champions up 22-5.

However, the momentum began to shift as Australia found their rhythm and possession. Winger Dylan Pietsch scored their first try in the 29th minute, a deserved reward for the Wallabies, who last won the Rugby Championship in 2015. Despite the Boks’ lead, the Wallabies’ growing confidence was a clear warning of what was to come.

Second-Half Collapse

The Wallabies had a perfect start to the second half, with number 8 Harry Wilson crashing over for their second try. From that point on, the Springboks struggled in every area of the game, losing possession at the breakdown, and making costly turnovers and knock-ons. The Australians grew in confidence, scoring five unanswered tries.

Joseph-Aukoso Suaalii added a third try in the 58th minute, followed by Wilson’s second. The Wallabies took the lead for the first time in the game, and the upset was on. Max Jorgensen and Tom Wright then sealed the victory with two more tries, silencing the crowd at Ellis Park.

The Springboks’ second-half collapse, in which they scored no points, was a stark contrast to their opponents’ clinical performance. This result has blown the Rugby Championship wide open, and it will be interesting to see what changes coach Rassie Erasmus makes before the next match.
