Springboks Call Up Mapimpi Amidst Injury Woes
The injury-plagued Springboks have called up two-time World Cup winner Makazole Mapimpi ahead of their final Rugby Championship match against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday.
Mapimpi’s club teammate and captain, Siya Kolisi, along with Kurt-Lee Arendse, were both released from the squad due to injuries.
Kolisi and Arendse suffered their injuries during last weekend’s 38-22 defeat to Australia and are expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.
While there is sufficient cover at loose forward, coach Rassie Erasmus opted to call up Mapimpi to provide cover for the backline. Mapimpi will join the team in Cape Town on Monday night.
The double Rugby World Cup winner has 47 Test matches under his belt and will undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience to the Bok backline.
The match at DHL Stadium on Saturday (17:10).
