Ouaddou Asks For Patience Amid Early Criticism

Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou has made a public plea for more time to implement his vision, defending his early team selections and addressing the criticism that has marked the start of his tenure.

The Moroccan coach, who replaced the popular Jose Riveiro, guided the Buccaneers to the MTN8 final with a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Ouaddou’s time at the club began with two consecutive league losses, which drew sharp criticism from fans, particularly for leaving out key players such as Evidence Makgopa, Thalente Mbatha, and Deano van Rooyen.

However, the team has since rebounded, winning its last two matches with these players back in the lineup.

In a candid post-match interview, Ouaddou suggested that the swift criticism he has faced is partly due to his race, claiming that black coaches often aren’t given the same patience as their counterparts.

“When you have a black skin, straight away, people don’t give you time,” Ouaddou said. “I just ask people to give me time; I know my competencies. I am African, I am proud.”

He acknowledged that fan frustration is a part of managing a top club but urged patience. “When my fans are not happy, it is because you are in a big club, you are not winning. I understand them. What can I do? The only thing is to work hard, to be silent, and be passionate.”

After the victory against Sundowns, Ouaddou was seen embracing his assistant, Mandla Ncikazi, and several players. He explained this gesture as a show of appreciation, emphasizing his belief in local talent. “I believe in African competencies,” he stated.

“I don’t need to bring people here. I kissed them because this victory is not only my victory but also a victory of the staff, it is a victory of the club, and it is a victory of the management.”

With the team now preparing for the MTN8 final, Ouaddou hopes his recent successes will earn him the trust and time he needs to build a legacy at the club. “If I have time, maybe I can help the club. If I don’t have time, I will be sacked and I will go elsewhere because it is football, it is life. But I love my job,” he concluded.
