Nigeria Revive World Cup Hopes Ahead Of Bafana Clash

Nigeria kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes alive with a crucial 1-0 victory over Rwanda at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday. The win came at a cost, however, as star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off with an injury in the first half.

Nigeria will be hoping for Osimhen’s speedy recovery ahead of their upcoming clash against Bafana Bafana, who recently extended their lead at the top of Group C to 16 points after beating Lesotho 3-0.

South Africa now sits six points clear of second-placed Benin.

A Tense Match and an Early Blow

The game was particularly significant for Nigeria, who had a disappointing qualifying campaign before this match, winning just one of their six previous games. They started the day in fourth place in Group C with seven points.

The match featured familiar faces for fans of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), with Kaizer Chiefs’ Fiacre Ntwari in goal for Rwanda and Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali starting for Nigeria.

Both goalkeepers had a relatively quiet first half, as neither side was able to create many clear-cut opportunities. Nigeria, feeling the pressure to win, struggled to break down a well-organized Rwandan defense, frustrating the home crowd.

Just after the half-hour mark, Ademola Lookman had a shot blocked as Nigeria began to pick up the pace. However, their momentum was halted when Osimhen suffered an injury and was substituted 10 minutes before halftime, seen with an ice pack on his left ankle. Rwanda’s defensive strategy of keeping Nigeria at arm’s length worked effectively throughout the first half.

Second Half Breakthrough

The breakthrough finally came six minutes into the second half. Toluwalase Arokodare’s initial shot was saved by Ntwari, and Ola Aina’s follow-up was blocked. The ball then fell kindly for a grounded Arokodare, who managed to hook it home to give Nigeria the lead.

The goal seemed to inject new life into the Nigerian team, spurred on by the now-energized crowd. Rwanda, having offered little in attack, found themselves on the ropes. Ntwari was forced into two quick saves to deny Simon Moses and Lookman to prevent Nigeria from doubling their lead just after the hour mark.

The victory has moved Nigeria into third place in the group, leapfrogging Rwanda. They are now six points behind group leaders South Africa, whom they will face in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
