Bafana Make A Late Call Up Against Rwanda

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has called up Stellenbosch striker Ashley Cupido for South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

Cupido received a late call-up to the national team ahead of Tuesday’s clash at Mbombela Stadium, after being selected by Broos as an injury replacement.

The 24-year-old forward is expected to replace Lyle Foster, who did not train with the rest of the squad on Monday. Foster trained separately and was seen with his knee heavily strapped, suggesting he may have sustained an injury during the goalless draw against Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Bafana Bafana currently sit second in Group C and face a must-win encounter against Rwanda to keep their hopes of automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup alive.

However, even a win might not be enough if Nigeria fail to beat group leaders Benin in Uyo, with both matches scheduled for Tuesday.

Benin, who defeated Rwanda in Kigali, lead the group with 17 points after nine matches — two points ahead of South Africa and three clear of third-placed Nigeria.
