Ouaddou Explains Why He Benched Mbokazi Against Arrows

Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou says his decision to rest Mbekezeli Mbokazi against Golden Arrows was part of a player management strategy to prevent burnout during a busy schedule.

Mbokazi, the vice-captain of Pirates, started on the bench in their 3-1 victory over Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night. The midfielder was later introduced late in the match as Ouaddou managed his workload and helped his side secure the win.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who has also been influential for Bafana Bafana in their successful FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, is expected to return to the starting lineup when Pirates face Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout semi-final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“We have to take into consideration the number of competitions and the physical demands on the players,” said Ouaddou.

“We have to manage them carefully. It’s not easy, but you must keep the team competitive. You can’t make too many changes and lose momentum.

“Mbokazi has had a heavy load since the start of the season, with both the national team and Pirates. Together with my staff and the performance department, we felt it was the right moment to give him a short rest. It was a tactical choice, and he did well when he came on.”

The Soweto giants are aiming to maintain their reputation as South Africa’s cup kings, having lifted seven domestic trophies in the past four seasons — including four consecutive MTN8 titles and three Nedbank Cups between 2022 and 2024.

However, Ouaddou has cautioned against underestimating Richards Bay, who previously knocked Pirates out at the quarter-final stage of the same competition two seasons ago.

“If Richards Bay have reached the semi-final, it shows they are a quality side with good players,” Ouaddou warned.

“Cup matches are different — they’re not just about tactics or technique. You have to play with heart and spirit.

“We expect a strong team performance from them. Teams always give their best against Orlando Pirates — we’re used to it. We’re working on building mental strength and preparing for that challenge.”
