Pirates Stretch The Lead At The Top

Orlando Pirates strengthened their lead at the top of the table as they handed Kurt Lentjies a nightmare start to his tenure as AmaZulu coach in a DStv Diski Challenge match played at Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates cruised to a convincing 3-0 victory, moving to 34 points after 14 matches, five points clear of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.

The goals were scored by Thuto Sesipi, Simphiwe Masilele and Joy Manana. The scoreline could have been even more emphatic, but Pirates missed a penalty.

Manana, who had the chance to complete a brace, stepped up to take the spot-kick but failed to convert, with AmaZulu goalkeeper Lindani Nene comfortably saving the effort. The penalty lacked power, and Manana appeared short of confidence as he approached the ball.

The victory ensured that Pirates will spend another weekend at the summit of the DStv Diski Challenge standings, registering their 11th win of the season with an emphatic display against AmaZulu.

However, Sundowns will have an opportunity to close the gap when they face Sekhukhune United on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, in a match played in the KwaZulu-Natal township of Hammersdale, Stellenbosch FC thrashed Polokwane City 3-0 to move into third place on the table with 28 points, just one behind Sundowns.
