Xoki Grateful To Be Alive

Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki has broken his silence with gratitude and perspective after suffering an injury in a car accident, opening up on recovery, resilience, and supporting teammates.
The 30-year-old Buccaneers’ defender spoke publicly for the first time since being injured in a road traffic incident involving Pirates on 31 August on the R21 highway in the Eastern Cape.
The accident occurred as the Buccaneers were returning from Gqeberha following their impressive 3-0 Betway Premiership victory against Chippa United.
Xoki, alongside head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and other members of the club’s staff, was immediately transported to the hospital after the incident.
Since then, the former AmaZulu captain has been absent from Pirates’ matchday squads, with his recovery still ongoing.
Xoki has also confirmed that he is yet to return to training with his teammates as he continues to focus on his rehabilitation process.
Breaking his silence, Xoki reflected on the difficult period with humility and appreciation for life and support around him.
“I’m just grateful for life, I’m grateful to be alive and having another chance to be good with life,” Xoki said.
“I’m busy doing rehab currently, taking it one day at a time. I’m grateful for the club and everyone who supported me during this difficult time.”
Despite not being able to contribute on the field, Xoki revealed that he has embraced a different role within the squad as Pirates continue to perform well in his absence.
The 30-year-old explained how he has mentally adjusted to not playing while remaining committed to the team’s success.
“I wouldn’t say it’s difficult, but I would say it’s been a nice challenge to help the guys that are playing,” Xoki added.
“I’m not training with them for now, but I’m trying to impact any positivity that I can to help the team. So, it’s been nice to see the young players who are stepping up.
“These young players are the future that we hope they grab it with both hands because the future belongs to them. We are playing our role to make sure we guide them for the upcoming years.”
Pirates’ next assignment will be a Betway Premiership encounter against Marumo Gallants at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.
Once again, Xoki will be watching from the stands as he continues to nurse his injury, offering support from the sidelines while patiently working towards a full recovery.
