Kwinika Vows Chiefs Will Avoid Historic Fourth Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika says Amakhosi are determined to bounce back to winning ways when they face Durban City in the Betway Premiership on Sunday, insisting they refuse to become the first group in the club’s history to lose four league matches in a row.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys head into the encounter at FNB Stadium under pressure after suffering three consecutive league defeats against Stellenbosch, Orlando Pirates, and Richards Bay.

With the team desperate to end that run, Kwinika emphasised that the focus within the squad remains on producing a positive performance and result rather than dwelling on recent disappointments.

“I think the focus now is obviously the positive and the losing is not on our minds,” Kwinika said.

“We need to get positive results, and I don’t think we will be part of that history to be the group who lost four league games in a row since the club was established.

“I think the boys know what is at stake, and we are heading in that direction, and I don’t think we will be part of that history.”

The two sides last met during the first round of the league in 2025, where Amakhosi secured a narrow 1–0 victory in a sold-out and fully packed Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Despite the difficult run of results, the Amakhosi vice-captain admitted that the players take full responsibility for the current situation at Naturena.

Chiefs are currently sitting in sixth place on the league table with 30 points after 18 matches, and their domestic campaign has also been disappointing after failing to qualify for the MTN8 and being eliminated from the Carling Knockout Cup, Nedbank Cup, and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Kwinika, however, insisted that the squad understands the expectations that come with representing a club of Chiefs’ stature.

“We take full accountability for whatever is happening, and we don’t blame anyone else, but we know that we are all in this one together,” he added.

“So, it’s up to us to say we want to change this, and we know that we are the ones who are in a position to change this because there’s no one who can come and save us.

“So, for us as a group, we have to change the situation, and I think, to be honest with you, it’s not that bad. Unfortunately, the brand we are in requires us to be on top every day.

“So, to be honest, the boys know that we can sit back and, in the end, that doesn’t really matter, but the reality is that it is not as bad as it seems. I think things change in the space of three weeks, and it seems like we are so bad, but if you can go back, we’ve been trying to do well.”

With the pressure mounting and expectations always high at Amakhosi, Sunday’s clash presents an important opportunity for the Soweto giants to steady their season and return to winning ways.
