Cardoso Relieved Of Semi-Finals Spot Despite Malien Defeat

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso expressed relief after guiding his side to the CAF Champions League semi-finals following their clash against Stade Malien on Sunday.
Sundowns came close to missing out on qualification after suffering a 2-0 defeat away from home while reduced to 10 men, following a red card shown to Aubrey Modiba.
The defender will now miss the semi-final against Espérance de Tunis, adding to the challenge facing the Brazilians.
Sundowns are chasing their second CAF Champions League title, having last lifted the trophy in 2016, as they continue their impressive run on the continent.
They will now face Espérance in the semi-finals—the same side that eliminated them at this stage in the 2023/24 season when Cardoso was also in charge—setting up a compelling encounter.
Despite the away defeat, Cardoso was satisfied with the team’s progress.
“I’m very happy with the qualification,” said Cardoso.
“I’m happy for the club to continue fighting for more, for the players to reach the semi-final again, and for the fans in South Africa, as well as all the staff and technical team.”
This marks the fourth consecutive time Sundowns have reached the Champions League semi-finals, having lost in last season’s final to Pyramids FC.
However, Pyramids have already been eliminated in this year’s quarter-finals by AS FAR.
Sundowns will now meet Espérance for the third consecutive time in the semi-finals, having beaten them at this stage last season.
“I’m happy for myself, of course. It’s my third year in Africa and my third semi-final. Reaching another semi-final makes me very happy as a coach,” Cardoso added.
