Dayimani Stormers Return: Why The Loose Forward Left Racing 92

Hacjivah Dayimani has opened up about the factors behind his return to the DHL Stormers from France, citing family considerations and limited game time following a long-term injury as the primary drivers for his homecoming.

The versatile loose forward also expressed his willingness to embrace a hybrid role, stating he is ready to contribute to the Stormers’ setup in whatever capacity is required.

Following a two-year stint in France with Racing 92, Dayimani rejoined the Stormers in February on a deal running until the end of the season. His return comes after an initial spell at the Cape side, where he played a key role in their 2022 United Rugby Championship title-winning campaign.

Reflecting on his time abroad, Dayimani pointed to a series of events that ultimately influenced his decision to return.

“There were a few factors, the first being that the guy who brought me to Racing got fired,” he said.

“I got injured and was out for seven months with an Achilles injury and came back.”

Upon his return to fitness, Dayimani found himself being utilised differently.

“The coach and I had a conversation regarding his wanting me to remain at wing for the rest of the season, seeing me as a hybrid player. I transitioned to playing wing – playing two or three months in the position,” explained Dayimani.

“They wanted me to cover 80% on the wing and 20% on the flank because we had a lot of flankers and I was injured,” he elaborated.

“They said if we don’t put you on the wing, it’s a waste.”

Traditionally a loose forward, Dayimani is known for his athleticism, particularly his lineout ability and skill in calling set pieces. However, his rugby journey has included experience across multiple positions.

“I played Super Rugby at wing, in the Currie Cup I played centre,” he said.

He also credited coaches Joe Rokocoko and Frédéric Michalak for helping him develop in a wider role during his time in France.

“When I went to France, Joe Rokocoko and Frederic Michalik said they had to try me at wing. I went three to four months training strictly at wing – working on my positioning, kicking, and how I could chase. Coming back now, it’s opened up my arsenal.”

Now back in Cape Town, Dayimani is open to fulfilling whatever role is required.

“I have had a conversation with the coaches that if I am needed at wing, I am comfortable. At this point, I am willing to play wing, centre, or flank, depending on where the coach puts me.”

Off the field, family considerations also played a significant role in his decision to return.

As a husband and father, Dayimani mentioned that, between the back-and-forth travel from France to South Africa and wanting more playing time, an agreement with Racing 92 was reached.

“My family being there and wanting to come to SA, going between SA and France, and me not getting game time because of my injury, I spoke to the coach,” he explained.

“At first, he wanted me to stay, and after a week or two, the Stormers began having injuries. The coach wanted what was best for me, and he said that if I wanted to go for my career, he’d give me his blessing.”

Dayimani added that the agreement with Racing 92 was amicable, allowing him to return to the Stormers under mutually acceptable terms.
