Zwane Praises AmaZulu Growth Despite “Hard Lesson”

AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has lauded his squad’s growth, discipline, and commitment, highlighting their steady progress as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most consistent performers this season.

Usuthu have enjoyed a strong run in the Betway Premiership, currently sitting fourth on the log with 39 points from 25 matches.

This consistency builds on last season’s top-eight finish, which earned them a spot in the MTN8, though their journey in that competition was cut short by Stellenbosch in the quarterfinals.

A Realistic Assessment of Squad Value

Despite their high league standing, Zwane remains grounded about the gap between his developing side and the league’s traditional giants.

“I think we have to be realistic, but we also need to consider the value of the squad,” Zwane said.

“We appreciate these players — they’ve done a lot, to be honest. On Saturday, we were tested. We are not on the same level as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, and Pirates exposed us.

“Our current position on the log suggests we are one of the best teams, but that can sometimes be misleading. Many of our players have come through development structures and have not yet been tested at this level.”

Usuthu suffered a 3–0 defeat to Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Amstel Arena this past weekend — a result Zwane described as a valuable learning experience.

“It was their first time playing at Orlando Stadium against Pirates, and it was a tough lesson for some of them. But sometimes you have to learn the hard way, and that can help you grow as a player,” he added.

“For us to be in fourth position, I will always say they have done a lot for themselves. Athini (Maqokolo) nearly scored a great goal — he was playing in the third division last season, and now he’s facing Orlando Pirates. He will adapt because he has never experienced such a demanding environment.”

With five matches remaining before the end of the season, Zwane reiterated the team’s ambition and belief.

“Our target has always been to finish fourth, and we are an ambitious team — there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“We always try to work together and do things the right way. We are building a foundation, and sometimes that takes longer than expected, but I believe the players have done a very good job this season.

“We are confident of achieving something this season, and we need to maintain this momentum. I’m proud of the players because they have done well so far.”

AmaZulu will next face Chippa United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday as they continue their push to meet their season objectives.
