Five-Star Chiefs Sweep Aside Magesi To Cement Third Spot

Kaizer Chiefs solidified their grip on third place with a clinical 4-1 demolition of bottom-of-the-log Magesi FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

The victory marks a fifth consecutive league win for Amakhosi, who now move to 45 points after 23 matches.

It was the second time Chiefs have scored four goals in a league match this season, having achieved the same feat against Orbit College earlier in the campaign.

The win was never in doubt for Amakhosi, who were largely untroubled throughout, as they moved to 45 points after 23 matches.

Meanwhile, Magesi’s struggles continue under coach Allan Freese, who has managed just one victory since taking over from John Maduka.

They remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 17 points from 24 matches, and are rapidly running out of opportunities to avoid relegation.

An hour before kick-off, the pitch was waterlogged following heavy rain, but the drainage system at Peter Mokaba Stadium — set to host the Nedbank Cup final next month — worked efficiently.

By kick-off, the surface was smooth and playable, although the slick conditions meant the ball moved quickly, demanding precision in passing.

Chiefs entered the match on a four-game winning streak, reinforcing their position in the top three.

Magesi, on the other hand, were desperate for points after a defeat to Sekhukhune United at the same venue over the weekend.

Amakhosi had also beaten Magesi 2–0 in the reverse fixture when the sides met just last month.

With chances at a premium early on, Flávio da Silva broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a superb strike.

Glody Lilepo did well to keep the ball in play before finding da Silva inside the box. The Guinea-Bissau striker showed great technique, swivelling before firing past Elvis Chipezeze to give Chiefs the lead.

It was da Silva’s second goal in as many matches, having also scored in the win over TS Galaxy, and he had found the net against Magesi in their previous meeting in March.

Chiefs doubled their advantage just four minutes later with only their second shot on target. Chipezeze failed to deal with a corner, and after the ball ricocheted off a teammate, it fell kindly for Wandile Duba, who finished at the back post.

It capped a dream first half for Amakhosi, who went into the break leading 2–0.

The third goal arrived in the 62nd minute. Reeve Frosler showed great awareness to cut the ball back, leaving Mdu Shabalala unmarked in the box, and the midfielder calmly fired into the far corner, punishing poor marking by the hosts.

Chiefs briefly switched off in the 70th minute, allowing Magesi to pull one back.

A long, floated free kick from Mncedisi Vandala was met by a powerful header from Diteboho Mofokeng, leaving Brandon Petersen with no chance.

However, Chiefs restored their three-goal cushion in the 83rd minute. Khanyisa Mayo headed home from a perfectly delivered cross by Frosler — his second assist of the match — after the former came on at halftime for da Silva.
