“We Never Forgot Who We Are”: Msimango On The Mentality Fueling Chiefs’ Top 3 Surge

Kaizer Chiefs center-back Given Msimango has credited a steadfast commitment to tactical consistency and a revitalized dressing-room mentality for the club’s dramatic turnaround this season.

Amakhosi endured difficult seasons in the past, at times finishing outside the top eight and only managing positions around fifth or sixth in the league.

However, this season has marked a significant turnaround, with Chiefs currently sitting third on the table with 46 points from 24 matches.

Their resurgence is further highlighted by a six-match unbeaten run, with five wins and one draw in their last six outings. This strong form comes at a crucial time as they prepare for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Reflecting on the team’s progress, Msimango emphasised the importance of staying true to their identity despite challenges.

“I think it’s about consistency in our methods, regardless of how difficult the situation is,” he said.

“We started to adapt even when results were not always going our way and we were receiving negative feedback. But we never forgot who we are as Kaizer Chiefs players. We applied ourselves well, and now we’re starting to see that consistency pays off.

“I also think the shift in mentality has played a huge role in what we’re achieving. Credit to the Kaizer Chiefs players for that.”

Turning to his personal journey, the 28-year-old defender endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury that kept him out for eight months.

The former TS Galaxy captain last featured before the setback in April 2025, during the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns, before making his return in December.

Since then, Msimango has played in seven matches across all competitions, including the league, CAF Confederation Cup, and Nedbank Cup, with the Carling Knockout the only competition he has not featured in this season.

“It feels good to be back. I thank God because I was sidelined for almost a year due to injury,” he added.

“Now I’m back and contributing to the team, which makes me really happy. I hope to continue contributing even more.

“It wasn’t easy, but I have a strong support structure. I also have a good relationship with the club, and they’ve given me the support I need.

“This is part of the game, and I understand that as a professional. You have to learn how to deal with challenges as they come and keep moving forward.”
