KZN MEC Reacts To Durban City Triumph

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, has praised Durban City FC for claiming their maiden trophy—the Nedbank Cup—this past weekend.
City came from behind to defeat TS Galaxy 2–1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
The Durban-based side secured the win through goals by Mfanafuthi Mkhize, who cancelled out an own goal by Jean Lwamba, before the Congolese striker redeemed himself by scoring the winner.
The victory also secured City a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
It was third time lucky for City, who had previously lost two cup finals—the Ke Yona Cup in the 2017/18 season and the Telkom Knockout final to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2019/20.
They are only the second KwaZulu-Natal club to win a major PSL trophy since Lamontville Golden Arrows claimed the MTN8 in 2009, and the first from the province to win the Nedbank Cup.
“MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mntomuhle Khawula, congratulates Durban City FC on its well-deserved Nedbank Cup final victory,” Khawula, who was in attendance in the final on Saturday, said in a statement.
“The tenacity, drive, and composure displayed by the KwaZulu-Natal side—coming from 1–0 down against TS Galaxy to win 2–1—affirm KZN’s status as a sporting powerhouse.
“Sithi Halala Durban City FC, Halala!”
The victory comes with an R7 million windfall, crucial for their upcoming continental travels.
City will return to action for the first time since their cup triumph when they visit Bloemfontein Celtic at Dr Molemela Stadium on Tuesday.
