Cardoso Explains Saleng Absence And Mvala Injury Return

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has addressed Monnapule Saleng’s recent absence, explaining that the attacker’s unavailability is due to medical reasons as the team carefully manages player fitness during a crucial stage of the season.
Saleng, who joined the Brazilians during the January transfer window from Orlando Pirates while still recovering from injury, has yet to fully establish himself in Sundowns’ starting line-up.
The 28-year-old has made seven appearances so far and registered one assist, but he has started just once, with the rest of his outings coming off the bench.
His absence in Sundowns’ last two matches against Polokwane City—both victories—raised questions among supporters. He was named on the bench in the first midweek clash but did not feature, and was subsequently left out of the matchday squad.
Cardoso clarified the situation, pointing to medical concerns.
“There is no competition because there is space for all of the players,” said Cardoso.
“I think if you look at the medical report, it is clear that Saleng could not be available to be with the team against Polokwane City.
“In the previous match against Polokwane City, again, he didn’t feel well and was on the bench, but we couldn’t remove him from the team sheet because it was too late. Obviously, he is now under treatment.”
Saleng’s move in January was reportedly worth R10 million plus add-ons, increasing the pressure for a “Return on Investment” (ROI) on the pitch.
Meanwhile, Cardoso also provided an update on Mothobi Mvala, who has endured a frustrating campaign due to injury setbacks.
Mvala has featured in just two matches this season, with his last appearance coming against Lamontville Golden Arrows in October 2025, where he played only 29 minutes.
Since Mvala’s last game in October, Sundowns have kept 12 clean sheets, highlighting the competitive nature of the defense he is trying to rejoin
“Look, Mothobi is training with the team—not fully for a long time, but for almost a week now,” he added.
“Obviously, we are taking into account the long period he was out. He has not returned just to train, but to perform, which is important. We would love to have almost everybody at a good level.
“When you have mobility in your squad—players who can come onto the pitch and make a difference, especially in attack—that is very important for us.
“Mothobi is a very important player in the dressing room and also for us in terms of what we see. He is a leader with strong character, and I value him highly.
“But we should not put too much pressure on him to return to the pitch too soon. It is important to be patient so that when he does come back, he is fully ready.”
As Sundowns prepare to face Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday in a key league encounter, Saleng will be hoping to recover in time to be involved, while the club continues its push for another league title.
